Mary Rose’s greatest wish was to go to SM Seaside—a very large mall in Cebu. The first time we transported her to the hospital, she was very sick as she lay in the back seat, yet as we drove by SM Seaside she perked up and said “SM Seaside!” From that moment, I knew that we needed to grant her wish. After being admitted to the hospital two times since this first trip, we knew the seriousness of her condition and that we needed to take her the day she was discharged as she would be her strongest after receiving multiple blood transfusions for her severe case of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

We had it all planned out! Two of our staff picked her and mom up at the hospital while two of us accompanied her father, brother, and sister to arrange everything at the mall. She was so happy to be heading home. Our staff asked her if she wanted to just drive through the parking lot before heading home — with excitement she said “yes!” As she arrived she saw her brother and sister holding a sign saying “Welcome to SM Seaside Mary Rose”, and she began to cry uncontrollably. She was overwhelmed with emotions. This was the first time the family had ever experienced a date together in a mall. Some of the things her family enjoyed for the first time that so many of us take for granted: elevator rides, 3-D movie with popcorn, McDonald’s cheeseburger, exploring the toy store, roaming around, and playing and running around the SkyPark. Just days before Mary Rose couldn’t walk. We will forever be thankful to have been able to grant her wish come true and create a forever memory!
